Both these type of watches are used nowadays. It depends on the taste and the need of the person to use one of them. But both mechanical and automatic are different from each other in many ways. Here are some differences between automatic and mechanical watches.

1.    Mechanical Watches

The components of such watches are all mechanical. They utilize energy from a wound spring. Such watches maintain time through regulated release of energy with the wheel train such as gear sets and an escapement. A single winding can run the watch for forty hours. There are few watches available that can last to almost ten days on single winding. Periodical service is essential to keep watch in working for long time. Originally mechanical watches were invented by Peter Henlein (1480-1542). Usually there are one hundred and thirty parts or may be more in some cases. Mechanical watches are well constructed to make them moisture, dirt and dust free. These watches are made with perfect craftsmanship, tradition and aesthetics.

2.    Automatic Watches

The origin of automatic watches can be trace back to Abraham Louis-Perrelet (1729-1826). The modern rotor that has been used in updated automatic watches was developed by Swiss brand Rolex. The credit of the invention can be given to Emily Borer who as the chief of the Rolex at that time. The movement of the body and the wrist makes the rotor revolve freely. Even the slight action of the wrist causes the rotor to rotate back and move forward in circular motion. Coiled spring the mainspring of automatic watch that powers the wristwatch. Automatic watch also need proper service for accurate performance. The ideal time of watch service is three to five years. Nowadays people love to wear automatic watches because they are self winding and needs no winding. Popular luxury brands like Rolex, Hublot, Omega, Panerai, Cartier, IWC and many more use automatic and self winding movements in their timepieces to make the moderate and appealing.
